Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.
Intralichen was introduced by Hawksworth et al. (2002) to describe four dematiaceous hyphomycetes that grow in the thalli or apothecia of lichens, sporulating on their surface. The genus is characterized by micronematous conidiophores composed of thick-walled, brown cells, and terminal, monoblastic conidiogenous cells. The conidia form in unbranched chains and are ellipsoid to subglobose, 0–1 septate, and vary from pale to dark brown. Some species also produce multicellular structures which are smooth-walled and pale to dark brown (Hawksworth et al. 2002). Due to the absence of molecular data, the phylogenetic placement of Intralichen remains uncertain and requires further studies.
Type species: Intralichen christiansenii (D. Hawksw.) D. Hawksw. & M.S. Cole.
= Bispora christiansenii D. Hawksw.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Intralichen.
