Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.
Hobsoniopsis was introduced by Sikaroodi et al. (2001) based on phylogenetic analysis to accommodate H. santessonii, which was transferred from Hobsonia christiansenii B. L. Brady & D. Hawksw. This genus is characterized by lichenicolous lifestyle, gray, erumpent sporodochial colonies, micronematous conidiophores, monoblastic conidiogenous cells, and solitary conidia that are pale brown, filamentous, helicoid, septate and irregularly verrucose. The type species, Hobsoniopsis santessonii, is the only species in this genus. Although SSU sequence data are available for the type species, the phylogenetic analysis using SSU sequence by Sikaroodi et al. (2001) revealed that its closest relative is Coccodinium bartschii, which belongs to Eurotiomycetes, with another slightly more distant clade belonging to Dothidea in Dothideomycetes. Determining the precise systematic position of Hobsoniopsis within these groups is challenging. Additional sequence data and more detailed phylogenetic analysis are needed to clarify its classification.
Type species: Hobsoniopsis santessonii (Lowen & D. Hawksw.) D. Hawksw (Sikaroodi et al. 2001).
= Hobsonia santessonii Lowen & D. Hawksw., on Peltigersa scabrosa.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Hobsoniopsis.
