Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.

Hawksworthiana was established by Braun (1988) to accommodate the lichenicolous species H. peltigericola, originally described as Ramularia peltigericola by Hawksworth (1980b). This species is characterized by its mycelium, which is immersed in convex, gall-like deformations on the host, cracking and becoming areolate with age. The conidiophores are micronematous and located beneath the surface of the gall, while the conidiogenous cells are ampulliform or subcylindrical. These cells emerge individually or in small groups, giving the surface a frosted appearance. The conidia are elongate-clavate to subcylindrical, hyaline, non-septate, and smooth-walled (Hawksworth 1980b). The relationship to teleomorphic states in Mycosphaerella remains uncertain. Due to the absence of molecular data, the taxonomic placement of this species remains unclear. Further phylogenetic analysis, supported by the availability of sequence data, is necessary to clarify its position.

Type species: Hawksworthiana peltigerae (Keissl.) Diederich, On the thallus of Peltigera canina, P. collina, P. degenii, P. didactyla, P. evansiana, P. extenuata, P. fibrillosa, P. hymenina, P. leucophlebia, P. membranacea, P. neckeri, P. polydactylon, P. praetextata, P. rufescens, P. soredians, inducing galls concolorous with the host thallus. (Diederich et al. 2024).
