Index Fungorum, Faceoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Classification: Tricladiaceae, Helotiales, Leotiomycetidae, Leotiomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Notes: Halenospora was erected by Jones et al. (2009), with H. varia (formerly known as Zalerion varium) as the type species based on ITS molecular data (Anastasiou 1963; Bills et al. 1999). Currently, Halenospora comprises a single species, H. varia, which was found in marine and terrestrial habitats in America (Anastasiou 1963; Jones et al. 2009). Halenospora is characterized by hyaline, simple, septate conidiophores, sometimes absent, and coiled or irregularly coiled conidia that are sometimes branched, and with a tangled knot or ball conidial filament (Anastasiou 1963). Halenospora resembles Zalerion, in producing simple, helicoid conidia. However, the conidia of Halenospora differ from those of Zalerion in producing lateral coiled conidia, whereas Zalerion has terminal spiral conidia (Moore and Meyers 1962; Anastasiou 1963).

Type species: Halenospora varia (Anastasiou) E.B.G. Jones, Fungal Diversity 35: 154 (2009)

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Halenospora.
