Classification: Incertae sedis, Lulworthiales, Lulworthiomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Notes: Halazoon was established by Abdel-Wahab et al. (2010), with H. melhae as the type species based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses of the combined LSU and SSU sequence data. Halazoon melhae was found from a marine habitat in Egypt (Abdel-Wahab et al. 2010). Halazoon is characterized by having obsolete or micronematous, hyaline to yellow-brown, cylindrical, septate conidiophores, holoblastic conidiogenous cells, and semi-contorted to multiple coiled conidia, which increase in size and become pigmented towards the apex (Abdel-Wahab et al. 2010). Currently, Halazoon comprises two species: H. fuscus and H. melhae (Index Fungorum 2024). However, H. fuscus differs from H. melhae in having widely filamentous conidia and not forming a ball of coiled conidial cells (Schmidt 1969; Abdel-Wahab et al. 2010).
Type species: Halazoon melhae Abdel-Aziz, Abdel-Wahab & Nagah., Mycological Progress 9 (4): 546 (2010).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Halazoon.
