Boehm et al. (2009a) placed Gloniaceae in Pleosporomycetidae families, incertae sedis, because of inadequate phylogenetic sequence evidence to raise the family to ordinal status. Jayasiri et al. (2017a), however, introduced a new genus, thus increasing the numbers of taxa for this group supported by molecular data and Jayasiri et al. (2018) introduced new order Gloniales. The divergence time for Gloniales is estimated as 109 MYA (stem age).

Type family: Gloniaceae. E. Boehm, C.L. Schoch & Spatafora, Mycol. Res. 113(4): 468 (2009).
