Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Classification Bionectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Saprobic on bare soil. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, astromatic, superficial on soil, solitary to gregarious, subglobose, collapsing or not collapsing upon drying, orange, KOH-, lactic acid-, minutely papillate. Paraphyses not observed. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, clavate, short-stipitate, apex rounded, with a discoid apical ring. Ascospores biseriate, ellipsoidal to widely fusiform, 1-septate, hyaline, finely striate. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous, acremonium-like. Conidiophores simple, born on smooth, septate hyphae, flexuous, smooth-walled. Conidiogenous cells simple, phialidic, subulate with a slightly flared collarette. Conidia ellipsoidal to subcylindrical, aseptate, hyaline, smooth-walled, arranged in slimy heads at the tip of phialides (adapted from Lechat et al. 2018b).

Known distribution: France (Lechat et al. 2018b)

Notes: Lechat et al. (2018b) described monospecific genus Geonectria to accommodate a taxon collected on soil. Geonectria forms astromatic, subglobose, orange perithecia, without KOH and lactic acid reactions, superficially on soil (Lechat et al. 2018b). Based on these typical characteristics of Bionectriaceae and molecular inference of LSU sequences, Lechat et al. (2018b) placed the rest of Geonectria in Bionectriaceae.

Type species: Geonectria subalpina Lechat, J. Fourn., M. Vega & Priou, Ascomycete.org 10(2): 81 (2018).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Geonectria.
