Classification: Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Saprobic on dead or decaying plant parts, mainly on branches or twigs. Stromata erumpent, of densely arranged hyphae, byssoid or densely prosenchymatous, giving rise to ascomata or sporodochia. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, seated on or with base partly immersed in stroma, solitary or cespitose in groups of five or more, pyriform, subglobose to globose or broadly ellipsoidal, with a short neck, collapsing laterally when dry, pale orange, brownish to reddish orange, surface smooth, rarely smooth to warted, pale orange, brownish to reddish orange, bright red or black, KOH+ dark purple red, LA+, (black ascomata hardly reacting with KOH and LA). Peridium of 1 or 2 strata. Paraphyses moniliform, hyaline. Asci (4–6–7–)8-spored, cylindrical, subcylindrical or clavate, apex broadly rounded or flattened, with or without a minute refractive ring. Ascospores obliquely uniseriate or biseriate above and uniseriate below, broadly ellipsoidal or ellipsoidal, 1-septate, slightly constricted at the septum, hyaline to pale brown or yellowish brown, smooth-walled or verruculose when mature. Asexual morph: Fusarium-like, hyphomycetous. Conidiophores simple or sporodochial. Conidiogenous cells monophialidic, polyphialidic. Microconidia usually absent, when present clavate or oblong ellipsoidal, aseptate, straight or gently curved, rounded at both ends or acute at the base, hyaline. Macroconidia formed in white to pale yellow slimy masses, gently curved, with a pedicellate foot cell, and more or less inequilaterally fusoid, hooked apical cell. Chlamydospores absent (adapted from Schroers et al. 2011; Lombard et al. 2015).
Known distribution: China (Zeng and Zhuang 2018), North America (Canada), New Zealand, Slovenia, Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK) (Lechat and Fournier 2017b, 2021; Schroers et al. 2011).
Notes: Schroers et al. (2011) established Geejayessia to accommodate Nectria cicatricum and three other species previously treated in Nectria and/or Cosmospora and further added one new species. The existence of Geejayessia was questioned by Geiser et al. (2013) due to Geejayessia species nesting within the Fusarium clade in their phylogenetic analysis. Furthermore, the fusarium-like asexual morphs produced by Geejayessia species also supported their findings. However, the species concept of Geejayessia was accepted by subsequent authors (Lombard et al. 2015; Lechat and Fournier 2017b, 2021; Zeng and Zhuang 2018). Here we identify Geejayessia as a distinct genus, which clades distant to Fusarium and is sister to the Neocosmospora clade in present phylogenetic analysis (Perera RH et al. 2023).
