Notes: Fouskomenomyces was established by Magaña-Dueñas et al. (2020) with F. cupreorufescens (formerly known as Spirosphaera cupreorufescens) as the type species based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses of the combined ITS, LSU, and tef1-α sequence data. Molecular data reveals that Fouskomenomyces encompasses two species, namely F. cupreorufescens and F. mimiticus (Magaña-Dueñas et al. 2020). However, F. cupreorufescens and F. mimiticus have distinct morphologies. F. cupreorufescens exhibits branched, loosely coiled, interwoven conidial filaments while F. mimiticus possesses brown to dark brown, globose to sub-globose propagules conidia (Voglmayr 2004; Magaña-Dueñas et al. 2020). Furthermore, Fouskomenomyces shares similarities with Spiroplana and Spirosphaera in having interwoven coiled conidia. Nevertheless, Fouskomenomyces can be easily distinguished from Spiroplana and Spirosphaera by its coppery brown conidia (Beverwijk 1953; Voglmayr 2004; Voglmayr et al. 2011). It is important to note that F. cupreorufescens was found in extremely low pH and nutrient-defficient habitats (Voglmayr 2004).
Type species: Fouskomenomyces cupreorufescens (Voglmayr) Magaña-Dueñas, Stchigel & Cano-Lira, Microorganisms 8 (9, no. 1355): 6 (2020).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Fouskomenomyces.
