Notes: Exosporium is characterized by having a stroma that give rise to fasciculate conidiophores with sympodial proliferation, and obclavate, pale to brown, distoseptate conidia, usually with a truncate, darkened base (Ellis 1971). The genus is typified by E. tiliae, a collection from Tilia in Germany (Ellis 1961). Sequences of this type collection are not available. A strain deposited in Westerdijk Institute as E. tiliae (CBS 484.77, CBS H-713, Québec, Canada) was identified as Corynespora olivacea (Crous et al. 2011) and later designed as an epitype of Helminthosporium caespitosum by Voglmayr and Jacklitsch (2017), who synonymized the genus Exosporium under Helminthosporium. Nevertheless, Videira et al. (2017) considered Exosporium to be an independent genus in Mycosphaerellaceae because the unresolved phylogeny of its type species. There are 42 morphological species but only two of them have sequence data (Videira et al. 2017; Hongsanan et al. 2020a). Exosporium has been reported from palms, especially species of the fan palm Livistona. In the present study, a new Exosporium species isolated from Licuala palm is introduced.
Type species: Exosporium tiliae Link.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Exosporium.
