Dothideales is an interesting and important order in Dothideomycetes and considered as the basis of the class Dothideomycetes. Most of the accepted species in Dothideales are saprobic (occasionally pathogens) and occur mainly on a wide range of woody and herbaceous plants in terrestrial habitats. Luttrell (1973), von Arx & Müller (1975), Barr (1987b), and Thambugala et al. (2014a) produced significant studies on Dothideales. Neocelosporiales is synonymized under Dothideales in this study based on phylogenetic analyses. Four families are recognized in Dothideales viz. Dothideaceae, Neocelosporiaceae, Saccotheciaceae and Zalariaceae. The divergence time for Dothideales is estimated as 177 MYA (stem age)
Type species: Dothideaceae. Chevall. [as ‘Dothideae’], Fl. gén. env. Paris (Paris) 1: 446 (1826).
