Diplolaeviopsis was established by Giralt et al. (1991) to describe a pycnidial fungus ranging from commensalistic to pathogenic on the apothecia and thalli of Lecanora strobilina. This genus is characterized by pycnidial conidiomata that are solitary, unilocular, immersed but erupting, subglobose to cup-shaped, dark brown to black, and ostiolate, with an angular texture composed of olive-brown, pseudoparenchymatous cells. The conidiophores are subglobose to subcylindrical, simple or sparsely branched, somewhat hyaline, or sometimes absent. The conidiogenous cells are acrogenous, subcylindrical, occasionally with enteroblastic proliferations, and hyaline. The conidia are holoblastic, solitary, elongate-soleiform to frog-shaped, hyaline, 1(–2)-septate, constricted at the septum, and smooth (Giralt et al. 1991).
Phylogenetic analyses by Etayo et al. (2015) and Suija et al. (2015b) revealed that Diplolaeviopsis clusters within the Helotiales clade. Further analysis by Pärtel et al. (2017) confirmed the genus placement within Cordieritidaceae (Helotiales), which was subsequently accepted by Wijayawardene et al. (2018). Since its establishment, three additional species have been introduced, resulting in four recognized species to date. Of these, only Diplolaeviopsis ranula has sequence data available in GenBank.
Type species: Diplolaeviopsis ranula Giralt & D. Hawksw.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Diplolaeviopsis.
