Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.
The monotypic genus Dictyophrynella was introduced by Batista et al. (1964) to describe the type species D. bignoniacearum, which is found on unidentified lichens on decomposing leaflets. This genus is characterized by dispersed, dark brown, superficial colonies on the surface of the host lichen. The pale brown mycelium branches at right angles and gradually thickens, becoming dark brown. Frequent, lateral hyphopodia are subglobose with mucronate necks. The conidiogenous cells are integrated and intercalary, resembling hyphae except for the attached conidia or scars. The conidia are solitary, obclavate, submuriform with 3–5 septa, dark brown with a pale, elongated apical cell. The length of the conidia varies between 25–45 µm (Hawksworth 1979a). With only one known species and no molecular data available, the phylogenetic status of this genus remains uncertain.
Type species: Dictyophrynella bignoniacearum Bat. & Cavalc. (Batista et al. 1964, Monteiro 2009).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Dictyophrynella.
