Classification: Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi

Cylindromonium was introduced by Crous et al. (2019) based on molecular analysis to accommodate C. eugeniicola, a new species found on leaf litter, along with two lichenicolous species, C. lichenicola and C. rhabdosporum, which were transferred from Acremonium lichenicola and Acremonium rhabdosporum, respectively. These species were found on Parmelia and Cladonia. Subsequently, Crous et al. (2020) added C. alloxyli, a species found on leaves, and Crous et al. (2021, 2023) further expanded the genus with two additional lichenicolous species: C. everniae on Evernia prunastri and C. lichenophilum on Parmelina tiliacea. Most recently, Ohmaki et al. (2023) described C. dirinariae, a lichenicolous species found on Dirinaria applanata. Cylindromonium comprises seven recognized species, five of which are lichenicolous.

This genus is characterized by hyaline, smooth, septate, and branched mycelium. Conidiophores are also hyaline and smooth, appearing either as individual unbranched conidiophores with a terminal phialide or as complex structures with a basal cylindrical cell that produces 2–4 phialides. The basal cell is subcylindrical, hyaline, smooth, and septate. Conidiogenous cells are phialidic, subcylindrical, and tapered apically with a flared collarette. Conidia are solitary or grouped in mucoid packets, cylindrical with obtuse ends, hyaline, smooth, granular, and typically 1-septate at the median (Crous et al. 2019).

Type species: Cylindromonium eugeniicola Crous.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Cylindromonium.
