Classification: Meliolaceae, Meliolales, Meliolomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, PezizomycotinaAscomycota, Fungi

Colonies epiphytic on leaves, rarely on twigs, or petioles. Superficial hyphae brown or dark-brown, branched, with or lacking hyphopodia, hyphal setae present. Hyphopodia capitate, alternate or opposite, 2-celled, brown. Hyphal setae arising from hyphae, dense, septate, dark brown, curved, rounded or hooked at the apex. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, solitary or gregarious, carbonaceous, sub globose to globose, verrucose, ascomatal setae and appendages lacking. Peridium comprising of two strata dark brown cells of textura angularis when viewed in squash mounts, with two, outer stratum with dark brown to reddish cells of textura globulosa to angularis, and inner stratum with hyaline, flattened cells. Hamathecium with evanescent hyaline paraphyses. Asci unitunicate, 2-seriate, 2–4-spored, ellipsoid to oval, evanescent. Ascospores 4-septate, cylindrical to oblong, initially hyaline becoming dark brown at maturity, constricted at the septa, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Phialides rarely seen, ampliform, interspersed between hyphal setae on hyphae (Mibey and Hawksworth 1997). Conidia unicellular, hyaline (Hongsanan et al. 2015a).

NotesCryptomeliola was introduced by Hughes & Pirozynski (1997) typifying Cryptomeliola orbicularis as the type species. It differs from other genera of Meliolaceae in having fascicular hyphal setae with bulbous tips. Mibey and Cannon (1999) observed that Cryptomeliola lacks hyphopodia and Hosagoudar (2003a) suggested to exclude this genus from Meliolales. However, some characters of ascomata, asci and ascospores resemble the Meliolaceae and we follow Hongsanan et al. (2015a).

Type species: Cryptomeliola orbicularis (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) S. Hughes & Piroz. Mycol. Pap. 174: 15 (1997)

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Cryptomeliola.
