Saprobic on dead wood. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, solitary to gregarious, superficial on host or on immersed to erumpent stroma, ovoid, globose to obpyriform or pyriform, collapsing laterally when dry, orange red, red to pale yellow, KOH+ reddish to purple (darker around ostiole), with a central ostiole. Ostiolar canal lined with hyaline periphyses. Peridium membranous, made of hyaline or orange or hyaline cells forming textura angularis. Paraphyses moniliform, hyaline. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, cylindrical to slightly clavate, apex rounded, with an evanescent wall. Ascospores ellipsoidal to ovoid, 0- or 1-septate, hyaline to pale brown. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous, fusarium-like or acremonium-like, mononematous, septate, hyaline, forming lateral phialides on somatic hyphae, or with one or two levels of monochasial branching, or irregularly branched. Conidiogenous cells monophialidic, cylindrical, producing two types of conidia. Microconidia ellipsoidal to obovoid, 0–1-septate, hyaline. Macroconidia falcate, straight to curved, 1–3-septate, apical cell blunt to hooked; basal cell poorly to well-developed, foot-shaped. Chlamydospores lacking (adapted from Huang et al. 2018; Crous et al. 2021).
Known distribution: France, New Zealand, China (Huang et al. 2018), Czech Republic, Norway (Crous et al. 2021).
Notes: Huang et al. (2018) established Cosmosporella for Cosmosporella olivacea and Cosmosporella obscura. Those taxa were previously placed in Cosmospora (Rossman et al. 1999). There are three species in the genus including Cosmosporella cavisperm (Huang et al. 2018; Crous et al. 2021).
