Classification: NectriaceaeHypocrealesHypocreomycetidaeSordariomycetesPezizomycotinaAscomycota, Fungi.

Saprobic, hemibiotrophic, plant pathogenic, on bark of conifers. Sexual morph: Ascomata 200–400 μm diam., perithecial, gregarious in numbers of 200–300, stromatic, globose to subglobose, darker around ostiolar area, not collapsing upon drying, initially orange and red, become dark-red when mature, KOH+ black, yellow in lactic acid. Stromats erumpent through bark. Peridium up to 60 μm wide; outer stratum comprising of a palisade of oblong cylindrical cells, cells perpendicular to locule in face veiw. Apical paraphyses septate, hyaline. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical. Ascospores 1-septate, ellipsoidal, constricted or not at septum, guttulate, hyaline, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Conidiophores from cultures simple or sparsely branched, producing microconidia or sporodochia (in the natural substrate), producing cylindrocarpon-like macroconidia. Microconidia aseptate, hyaline, formed in wet droplets. Macroconidia in white or pale-yellow masses, cylindrical, (3–)5–7-septate, typically 7-septate when mature, straight or somewhat curved, ends pointed or rounded, hyaline. Chlamydospores absent (adapted from González and Chaverri 2017).

Known distribution: Northern and Southern Hemispheres (González and Chaverri 2017), Southeast Asia (Thailand) (this study).

Notes: González and Chaverri (2017) found thet the Neonectria constricta, N. fuckeliana and N. tsugae clade was distant from the Neonectria sensu stricto clade. Therefore, González and Chaverri (2017) established Corinectria to accommodate those taxa based on multigene phylogeny, morphological differences and biology. Besides, Corinectria resembles Nectria mammoidea-group, which was described by Booth (1959) on the basis of perithecial wall anatomy (Chaverri et al. 2011). Corinectria species are restricted to coniferous hosts so far, and some pathogenic species are causing cankers (González and Chaverri 2017).

Type species: Corinectria fuckeliana (C. Booth) C. González & P. Chaverri, Mycol. Progr. 16(11-12): 1023 (2017).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Corinectria.
