Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Classification: Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Saprobic on woody plant material, including monocotyledons, plant pathogenic, sometimes isolated from soil. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, solitary or gregarious, associated with rhizomorphs or synnemata, obpyriform, ostiolate, surface slightly scruffy, smooth around the ostiole, orange-red to red, KOH+ purple. Peridium cells of textura angularis in vertical section, textura globulosa to textura angularis in face veiw. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 8-spored, clavate to cylindrical, with an apical ring. Ascospores uniseriate or apically biseriate, ellipsoidal, 1-septate, constricted at the septum, hyaline to yellow-brown, finely striate. Asexual morph: Conidiomata rhizostilbella-like, synnematous. Synnemata solitary or gregarious, in clusters of 2–5, occur laterally or as terminal elongations of the rhizomorphs or directly from the substrate, cylindric-capitate, subulate-capitate, cylindrical, slender to robust, straight to curved to sinuous, unbranched or branched, hirsute, pale luteous to luteous, KOH+ red to purple. Conidiophores unbranched, or once simple monochasial or monoverticillate; sometimes forming simple, unbranched, acremonium-like conidiophores in vitro. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, cylindrical, terminal, collarettes not flared, periclinal thickening visible. Conidia ellipsoidal, ovoidal with a truncate base, aseptate, hyaline, smooth-walled. Conidial masses subglobose, white to yellow. Marginal hyphae of synnemata echinulate to verrucose, septate, with clavate terminal cells, covering the whole surface of stipe, pale luteous, KOH+ bright red (adapted from Rossman et al. 1999, Herrera et al. 2013; Lombard et al. 2015).

Known distribution: China, India, Indonesia (Herrera et al. 2013); Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Germany, Nicaragua, Panama, Sri Lanka, Surinam, Venezuela (Rossman et al. 1999).

Notes: Hennings (1904b) introduced Corallomycetella based on C. heinsenii as the type. However, Corallomycetella heinsenii was religated to synonymy of Corallomycetella repens on the basis of morphological similarity (Rossman et al. 1999). Corallomycetella repens was originally based on Sphaerostilbe repens Berk. & Broome. There are two species in Corallomycetella (Rossman et al. 1999; Herrera et al. 2013). Corallomycetella species are somewhat similar to Corallonectria. However, Corallomycetella form rhizostilbella-like asexual morphs while Corallonectria has fusarium-like (Herrera et al. 2013).

Type species: Corallomycetella repens (Berk. & Broome) Rossman & Samuels, Studies in Mycology 42: 113 (1999).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Corallomycetella.
