Clauzadella was introduced by Navarro-Rosinés et al. (1996b) to accommodate the only species C. gordensis which grows on Verrucaria viridula. This genus is characterized by perithecioid, subglobular ascomata with a violet-pigmented excipulum, and elongate-clavate, eight-spored asci with colorless triseptate spores.

Due to this genus affinities with Stigmidium, Navarro-Rosinés et al. (1996b) initially attempted to place Claduzdella in the same family, Mycosphaerellaceae (Dothideales), according to the viewpoint of Eriksson et al. (1993). However, the systematic position of Stigmidium is controversial due to the differences in periphysate structures and supramycelium. Roux et al. (1994b) considered Stigmidium to be closer to the Verrucariaceae (Verrucariales). In several respects, Clauzadella is intermediate between typical Verrucariaceae and Stigmidium, a viewpoint confirmed by Roux et al. (1994b). Navarro-Rosinés et al. (1996b) argued that these differences were not significant enough to warrant a separate family designation. Therefore, they proposed that both Clauzadella and Stigmidium be placed in Verrucariaceae. To date, no molecular data are available for these two genera in Genbank, so their precise familial placement requires further study. In the meantime, we tentatively accept the placement of Clauzadella within Verrucariaceae.
