Classification Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Saprobic, corticolous, on bark of Quercus robur. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, gregarious, astromatic, superficial, easily removed from substratum, partially immersed in a subiculum, globose to subglobose, apex papillate, not collapsing upon drying, pale orange, KOH+ upper third turning partially red, LA+ yellow, overlain by golden yellow hyphal elements except ostiolar region. Peridium 25–35 µm thick, of two strata. Subiculum made of thin-walled, septate hyphae proliferating upwards to cover ascomatal surface, golden yellow, KOH+ dark orange. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 8-spored, evanescent, cylindrical to fusiform, apically truncate, apex with a refractive apical ring. Ascospores 12–15 × 3–4 µm, irregularly biseriate, subfusiform to narrowly clavate, rounded at ends, equally 1-septate, 2–4 guttulate, hyaline, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous, acremonium-like. Conidiophores born on smooth hyphae, abandant, usually simple or sometimes branched, yellow. Conidiogenous cells subulate, collarette unflared. Conidia 2.5–4 × 2.5– 3 µm, subglobose to widely ellipsoidal, aseptate, symmetric or asymmetric, abscission scar not visible, hyaline to pale yellowish, smooth-walled, in masses (adapted from Lechat et al. 2018a).
Known distribution: France (Lechat et al. 2018a)
Notes: Lechat et al. (2018a) introduced the monotypic genus Chrysonectria for C. finisterrensis. Chrysonectria is unified by phenotypic characters such as KOH+, LA+ pale orange ascomata, overlain by golden yellow hyphal elements and forming an acremonium-like asexual morph (Lechat et al. 2018a). Chrysonectria has been placed in Nectriaceae based on LSU analysis and morphology. The genus resembles Nectriaceae in having soft textures, brightly coloured perithecia change colour in 3% KOH and LA (Lechat et al. 2018a).
Type species: Chrysonectria finisterrensis Lechat, J. Fourn. & Priou, Ascomycete.org 10(4): 122 (2018).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Chrysonectria.
