The monotypic genus Chondronectria was established by Etayo (2017) to accommodate C. eriodermaticola, a species that parasitizes Erioderma cf. verruculosum. This genus resembles Nectriopsis and Trichonectria, characterized by its lichenicolous nature, subglobose orange to brown ascomata, and chondroid excipulum, which contains thick-walled cells with small lumina and orange oil droplets. The asci are cylindrical, unitunicate, and octosporous, producing ellipsoid, hyaline, uniseptate spores. Originally, Chondronectria was placed in Bionectriaceae by Etayo (2017) based on morphology, however, it was later placed within Hypocreales genera incertae sedis by Wijayawardene et al. (2020, 2022) and Hyde et al. (2024). Due to the absence of molecular data, its phylogenetic position remains to be further clarified.
