Epiphytic on living leaves. Colonies effuse, superficial. Superficial mycelium branched, septate, brown to dark brown forming a net-like pellicle. Hyphae septate, branched, brown, monilioid. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, gregarious to scattered, globose to subglobose, brown to dark brown, attached to the mycelial pellicle, ostiole lacking. Peridium 2-layered, outer cell layer comprising pigmented, dark brown, thick-walled cells of textura globulosa and inner layer thinner, composed of lightly pigmented to hyaline cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium lacking paraphyses. Asci 16-spored, bitunicate, broadly clavate, pedicellate. Ascospores irregularly arranged, ellipsoid to fusiform or elliptical, hyaline, 1-septum, asymmetric, smooth-walled, lacking a gelatinous sheath or appendages. Asexual morph: Undetermined (Pereira-Carvalho et al. 2009; Tian et al. 2021).
Notes: Pereira-Carvalho et al. (2009) introduced Chaetothyriomyces with C. brasiliensis as the type species. This genus was primarily placed in Chaetothyriaceae based on its superficial mycelia with septate monilioid hyphae, globose ascomata with mycelial pellicle, clavate bitunicate asci with hyaline, ascospores (Pereira-Carvalho et al. 2009). The asexual morph of this genus has not been recorded (Tian et al. 2021). Chaetothyriomyces morphologically resembles Ceramothyrium in having superficial, globose to subglobose ascomata without setae and with mycelium pellicle and clavate asci. However, the species of this genus differs from Ceramothyrium in having 16-spored asci with ellipsoidal, 1-septum ascospores while the latter has 8-spored asci and muriform or transversely-septate ascospores. Tian et al. (2021) retained Chaetothyriomyces in Chaetothyriaceae based on its morphology. However, 16-spored asci and monilioid superficial hyphae are distinct characters of this genus and molecular data is needed to confirm the placement of Chaetothyriomyces.
Type species: Chaetothyriomyces brasiliensis Pereira-Carv., Inácio & Dianese, Mycotaxon 107: 484 (2009)
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Chaetothyriomyces.
