Carnegieispora was introduced by Etayo et al. (2009a) to describe its only species, C. rimeliae, which grows on the bleached thalli of Parmotrema reticulatum (Taylor) M. Choisy. The genus is characterized by black, immersed conidiomata that initially appear pycnidial, but later fissure through the host thallus, resembling acervuli. The conidiophores arise from a subhyaline to brownish paraplechtenchyma and can be either subspherical or elongate. Conidiogenous cells are holoblastic, gray, elongate-cylindrical, annellidic, and produce 1–2 percurrent proliferations. Conidia are irregularly branched, dry, acrogenous, gray, and have a truncate base (Etayo et al. 2009a). Due to the absence of molecular data, the phylogenetic placement of C. rimeliae remains uncertain and is tentatively assigned to the Ascomycota genera incertae sedis (Hyde et al. 2024).
Type species: Carnegieispora rimeliae Etayo & F. Berger, on Parmotrema reticulatum (Etayo et al. 2009a)
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Carnegieispora.
