Classification: Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Saprobic on wood and twigs in freshwater. Asexual morph: Conidiophores semi-macronematous to macronematous, mononematous, pale brown to yellowish brown, smooth, thick-walled, septate, cylindrical, sometimes developed from assimilative hypha. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic, integrated, terminal, pale brown to yellowish brown. Conidia acrogenous, holoblastic, solitary, dry, olivaceous to greyish green, shiny, flattened, obovate or ellipsoidal, fan-shaped, mostly with truncated head, composed of many parallel, septate columns arranged in lines radiating from conidial base, internally contain chains of subhyaline, small moniliform cells. Sexual morph: Undetermined.
Notes: This order comprises a single genus. Cancellidium species have unique characters, such as large, flattened, fan-shaped conidia with many parallel columns of cells and internally contain chains of subhyaline, globose to fusiform cells (Cai et al. 2006; Seifert and Gams 2011). Phylogenetic analyses showed that it forms a distinct, well-supported clade (Luo et al. 2019; Hyde et al. 2020a) and the stem age of Cancellidiales is around 137 MYA, which falls in the range of an order (Hyde et al. 2017).
Type family: Cancellidiaceae K.D. Hyde & Hongsanan.
