Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.
= Calongia D. Hawksw. & Etayo, Lichenologist 42(4) 355 (2010).
Type: Calongia gibelluloides D. Hawksw. & Etayo.
Calongeomyces was introduced by Hawksworth et al. (2011) to accommodate the species C. gibelluloides, originally described as Calongia gibelluloides by Hawksworth et al. (2010a). This species is found on the thalli of Flavoparmelia caperata and discolored squamules of Cladonia species. Calongia was deemed invalid and subsequently synonymized with Calongeomyces. It is distinguished by macronematous, mononematous conidiophores that arise singly or in small groups from a single red-brown rhomboidal basal cell. The conidiophores are unbranched, rigid, and either septate or non-septate, with a swollen apical region enclosed in a membranous sheath. Polyblastic, brown conidiogenous cells emerge from the expanded apex; these cells are subglobose to ampulliform and bear several conidiogenous loci. The conidia are solitary, narrowly ellipsoid to elongate, 0–1-septate, smooth-walled, greyish-brown, and leave circular scars upon detachment (Hawksworth et al. 2010a).
The genus is tentatively placed within Ascomycota as genera incertae sedis, with its phylogenetic position remaining uncertain due to the lack of molecular data (Hyde et al. 2024).
Type species: Calongeomyces gibelluloides (D. Hawksw. & Etayo) D. Hawksw. & Etayo (Hawksworth et al. 2011).
= Calongia gibelluloides D. Hawksw. & Etayo (Hawksworth et al. 2010a).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Calongeomyces.
