Burgella was introduced by Diederich et al. (2007) to describe the lichenicolous species B. flavoparmeliae, found on Flavoparmelia baltimorensis. This genus is characterized by colonies of dispersed or agglomerated, honey-colored, shiny bulbils that are roundish, ellipsoid, or irregular in shape and partially immersed in the substrate. The cells are strongly adherent, both externally and internally, without any specialized structural features. Diederich et al. (2014) later added B. lutea, which is distinguished by its yellow to orange bulbils. At present, two species are recognized within Burgella. This genus was placed within Clavulinaceae by Diederich et al. (2014) based on LSU sequence, however it is placed within Hydnaceae as Clavulinaceae treated as a synonym of Hydnaceae (Hyde et al. 2024).

Type species: Burgella flavoparmeliae Diederich & Lawrey.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Burgella.
