Classification: Bionectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Biotrophic or necrotrophic parasites on leafy liverworts. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, perforating the leaf, subglobose to pyriform, often with a flattened disc at the apex, yellowish to orange-red, surface hairy, not reacting with KOH or iodine, ostiolate, Setae usually present, short, blunt, with cyanophilous walls, usually occurring on the apex of the perithecium. Ostioles inconspicuous, punctiform, with a richly periphysate ostiolar canal. Peridium multi-layered, composed of flattened, laterally stretched cells, textura angularis in face view, covered by more or less adjacent, irregularly oriented, hyaline or yellowish hyphae, often with cyanophilous walls. Apical paraphyses present, variable in shape and size, delicate, evanescent. Asci numerous, 8-spored, unitunicate, cylindrical to subclaviform or subfusiform, thin-walled, apex simple without an apical ring. Ascospores hyaline, two-celled; small cell narrowly ellipsoidal, rich in cytoplasm; appendage-like larger cell ellipsoidal or subcylindrical to club-shaped, often with cytoplasm less dense. Asexual morph: Undetermined (adapted from Döbbeler and Davison 2018).

Known distribution: USA, Italy, Greece (Döbbeler and Davison 2018)

Döbbeler and Davison (2018) introduced Bryotria for taxa discovered from Frullania and Porella species (Döbbeler and Davison 2018). The characteristic features of the genus are unique ascospore characters and parasitic lifestyle on liverworts (Döbbeler and Davison 2018). Bryotria adelpha and B. foertheri grow biotrophically, while B. lagodes and B. urophora are necrotrophic parasites of leafy liverworts (Döbbeler and Davison 2018). The genus was placed in Bionectriaceae by Döbbeler and Davison (2018). There are four known species of Bryotria (Döbbeler and Davison 2018). No molecular data are available and the placement of the genus needs verifying.

Type species: Bryotria urophora Döbbeler & P.G. Davison, Nova Hedwigia 106(1-2): 237 (2017) [2018].

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Bryotria.
