Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank, Fig 1.

Classification: Bionectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Bryophilous, biotrophic parasites or necrotrophic, on mosses, thallose liverwort or foliose liverworts. Sexual morph: Ascomata 100–250 µm diam., perithecial, mostly leaf-perforating, subglobose, ovoid to pyriform, orange, rarely yellow or brown, covered with white hyphae, KOH-. Setae absent or few occurring in the apical region, blunt, hyaline. Ostioles inconspicuous. Ostiolar canal lined with short, filamented periphyses. Peridium cells in surface view textura angularis. Apical paraphyses present, filamentous, hyaline. Asci 8-spored, numerous, cylindrical to clavate, thin-walled, without an apical ring. Ascospores up to 10 µm long, 3.5 µm wide, 1-septate, transverse septum not visible (often septum hidden by cyanophilous central band), variable in shape, ellipsoidal, rod-shaped, dumbbell-shaped, fusiform or rhomboid, colourless, epispore smooth or sometimes with cyanophilous warts. Asexual morph: Appressoria absent. Intracellular haustoria present. Conidiomata superficial, pulvinate, colourless. Conidiogenous cells bottle-like. Conidia 3.5–4.5 µm diam., globose, colourless (adapted from Döbbeler 2018; Döbbeler and Davison 2018).

Known distribution: UK, Ireland, Finland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Greece, Europe, USA, Madagascar, Tanzania, Costa Rica, France, French Guiana, Honduras, Ivory Coast, Uganda, D.R. Congo (Döbbeler and Davison 2018; Döbbeler 2004, 2018).

Döbbeler (2004) introduced Bryocentria for B. brongniartii and the genus was accepted in Bionectriaceae. There are 15 Bryocentria species listed in Species Fungorum (2022), while only two species have DNA data. The asexual morph of the genus is only known from B. perianthiicola (Döbbeler 2018). Bryocentria species are characterized by orange coloured perithecial ascomata without a KOH reaction, apical setae, differently shaped ascospores usually with a cyanophilous central band and a bryophilous habit (Döbbeler and Davison 2018).

Type species: Bryocentria brongniartii (P. Crouan & H. Crouan) Döbbeler, Mycol. Progr. 3(3): 248 (2004).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Bryocentria.
