Classification: Clypeosphaeriaceae, Amphisphaeriales, Xylariomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Notes: Brunneiapiospora is characterized by immersed ascomata usually beneath a darkened clypeus, cylindrical asci with a J+, or J- subapical ring, and uniseriate or overlapping uniseriate, apiosporous ascospores, apical cell larger and brown, basal cell smaller and hyaline to light brown, usually surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath (Hyde et al. 1998). The asexual morph of this genus is undetermined. Most Brunneiapiospora species are known from palms except B. appendiculata (Niranjan and Sarma 2018). Hyde et al. (1998) placed Brunneiapiospora in Clypeosphaeriaceae based on morphology, which has been widely accepted and followed (Kang et al. 1999; Vitoria et al. 2012; Niranjan and Sarma 2018; Hyde et al. 2020c). However, molecular data are only available for an unnamed Brunneiapiospora sp. (HKUCC 108) (Bahl et al. 2004), which is evidently misidentified. The blastn search of its LSU data showed that the closest hits are Colletotrichum fructicola (CBS 129761, CBS 129980, CBS 129978, identities 96%) and C. gloeosporioides (CBS 125964, identities 96%); the blastn search of its SSU data showed that the closest hits are Simplicillium lamellicola (CBS 116.25, identities 98.6%) and S. sympodiophorum (JCM 18184, identities 98.69%). Those genera belong to different orders, namely Glomerellales and Hypocreales in Hypocreomycetidae. Our study obtained molecular data from a collection, similar in morphology to the type species Brunneiapiospora javensis, which we recognize as a new species and illustrate herein. Our phylogenetic results showed it is nested in the family Barrmaeliaceae and is well-supported.
Type species: Brunneiapiospora javensis K.D. Hyde, J. Fröhl. & Joanne E. Taylor.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Brunneiapiospora.
