Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.
Bicoloromyces was introduced by Heuchert et al. (2015b) to describe B. kyffinensis, a species discovered on a sterile crustose lichen. This genus is characterized by black, effuse, caespitose fungal colonies composed of branched, septate hyphae that are smooth or slightly rugose, subhyaline to pale brown, and often encrusted with crystalline structures. The stromata are cushion-like, formed from swollen hyphal cells, or composed of subglobose to elongated stromatic cells that range from brown to dark brown. The conidiophores are immersed, aseptate, unbranched, and either subcylindrical or doliiform, producing conidia in basipetal chains. The conidia vary in color from pale aeruginous to blackish, and their morphology is diverse: they can be straight or curved, erect to decumbent, 0–1-septate, and range in shape from subglobose to ellipsoid or subcylindrical. They are also distoseptate (Heuchert et al. 2015b).
In the absence of molecular data, the phylogenetic status of Bicoloromyces remains unresolved, highlighting the need for further studies to determine its placement.
Type species: Bicoloromyces kyffinensis Heuchert, U. Braun & D. Hawksw. (Heuchert et al. 2015b).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Bicoloromyces.
