Classification: Sordariomycetes genera incertae sedis, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Biciliopsis was established by Diederich in Aptroot et al. (1997) to accommodate the type species B. leptogiicola, which is found on the cyanobacterial lichen Leptogium. The genus is defined by its superficial ascomata, aggregated on a black stroma, with hyphae arising from the outer wall and two-spored asci. Initially, Biciliopsis was placed in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis (Lumbsch et al. 2007, Lumbsch et al. 2010, Wijayawardene et al. 2014). However, Wijayawardene et al. (2018) reclassified it within Sordariomycetes genera incertae sedis. Zhurbenko et al. (2017b) later introduced a second species, Biciliopsis cladoniae, which occurs on Cladonia ceratophylla and is similar to B. leptogiicola, differing primarily by the absence of a stroma and the presence of erumpent ascomata with setae.
Type species: Biciliopsis leptogiicola Diederich.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Biciliopsis.
