Classification: Bionectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Fungicolous on Tuber. Sexual morph: Visible as discoloured areas on the host surface. Ascomata about 250 µm, cleistothecial, embedded in the host tissue, globose, hyaline to pale yellow. Peridium thin, membranous. Paraphyses septate, filiform, tapering towards the apex, hyaline. Asci evanescent, scattered, organised hymenium absent. Ascospores globose to angular, aseptate, hyaline, sparsely echinulate. Asexual morph: Undetermined (Rossman et al. 1999).
Known distribution: UK (Rossman et al. 1999)
Saccardo (1883) introduced Battarrina as a subgenus of Hypocrea, based on Hypocrea inclusa Berk. & Broome. Clements and Shear (1931) subsequently elevated Battarrina to generic level. Later Rossman et al. (1999) placed this unispecific genus in Bionectriaceae. Battarrina inclusa is a rare fungicolous, parasitic species occurring on fruiting bodies of Tuber (Clements and Shear 1931; Hobart 2016). The genus is known only from the type species and no molecular data are available and the placement of the genus needs verifying.
Type species: Battarrina inclusa (Berk. & Broome) Clem. & Shear, Gen. fung., Edn 2 (Minneapolis): 279 (1931).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Battarrina.
