Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.
Baliomyces was introduced by Zhurbenko et al. (2024) to describe the type species B. taimyricus, a parasite of Amygdalaria elegantior. This genus is characterized by the absence of conidiomata, with conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells that form colonies of blackish conidia on the host surface. The conidiogenous cells are brown, percurrently proliferating with up to five annellations, and exhibit variable shapes ranging from lageniform to ampulliform, occasionally subcylindrical, and either straight or curved. The conidia are acrogenous, solitary, and brown, with forms that are primarily subglobose but can also be obovoid to pyriform, truncate at the base with a relatively narrow scar. Less commonly, they may be ellipsoidal or oblong. They are aseptate, smooth-walled, or occasionally roughened in older conidia, typically containing numerous small guttules (Zhurbenko et al. 2024). In the absence of molecular data, the phylogenetic position of Baliomyces remains uncertain, and it is tentatively placed within Ascomycota as genera incertae sedis (Hyde et al. 2024).
Type species: Baliomyces taimyricus Zhurb. & Diederich (Zhurbenko et al. 2024)
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Baliomyces.
