Classification: Arthoniales genera incertae sedis, Arthoniomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi

Arthophacopsis was established by Hafellner (1998a) to accommodate the type species Arthophacopsis parmeliarum Hafellner, which grows on Parmelia sulcata Taylor from Austria. Arthophacopsis is characterized by apothecioid ascomata, often rounded to elongated with slit-like or rarely largely exposed discs, lacking margins, fissitunicate asci without an internal hemiamyloid layer at the tip, and hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid to oblong-ellipsoid ascospores without septum (Hafellner 1998a).

Later, Zhurbenko et al. (2020a) added a second species, Arthophacopsis heterodermiae Zhurb. & Diederich, which grows on the thallus of Heterodermia obscurata (Nyl.) Trevis. This species differs from the type A. parmeliarum in having simple paraphysoids, elongate clavate to subcylindrical, narrower asci with an apically not or only slightly thickened wall, and narrowly ellipsoid, longer, and narrower ascospores. Joshi et al. (2023c) introduced a third species, Arthophacopsis zhurbenkoi, which grows on the thallus of Heterodermia dissecta (Kurok.) D.D. Awasthi.

Due to the lack of molecular data, Arthophacopsis is tentatively placed within Arthoniales genera incertae sedis (Hyde et al. 2024).

Type species: Arthophacopsis parmeliarum Hafellner

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Arthophacopsis
