Fungalpedia – Note 2975, Arecophila

Arecophila K.D. Hyde.

Citation when using this data: Zhang JF et al. 2023 – Fungalpedia.

Index Fungorum, Faceoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank, Fig 1.

Classification: Cainiaceae, Xylariales, Xylariomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Arecophila was introduced by Hyde (1996) with five species (A. calamicola, A. egueissonae, A. gulubiicola, A. notabilis and A. nypae) and two combinations (A. chamaeropis and A. serrulata), and accommodated in Amphisphaeriaceae. However, Kang et al. (1999) revived the family Cainiaceae and included Arecophila based on typical morphological characteristics. Arecophila species are characterized by immersed ascomata under a non- or poorly-developed clypeus, long cylindrical to cylindric-clavate asci with a wedge-shaped, J+ apical ring, and two-celled, brown ascospores with longitudinal striations, and surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath (Hyde 1996; Kang et al. 1999). Eighteen epithets are listed in Index Fungorum (2023), but only five species with available sequence data in GenBank. A synopsis of Arecophila was provided by Li et al. (2022b).

Type species: Arecophila clypeata Q.R. Li, J.C. Kang & K.D. Hyde, MycoKeys 88: 135 (2022).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Arecophila.
