Classification: Xylariomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Dikarya, Fungi.
Amphisphaeriales was established by Hawksworth and Eriksson (1986), but later synonymized under Xylariales (Eriksson and Hawksworth 1987). This treatment was followed in subsequent studies (Hawksworth et al. 1995; Smith et al. 2003; Lumbsch and Huhndorf 2010; Maharachchikumbura et al. 2015). Senanayake et al. (2015) explored the unraveling relationships in the subclass Xylariomycetidae, and resurrected the order Amphisphaeriales and accommodated six families. This result was not recognized by Maharachchikumbura et al. (2015), who kept the order Xylariales to represent the taxa in Xylariomycetidae. However, Hongsanan et al. (2017) confirmed that Amphisphaeriales and Xylariales are distinct orders based on phylogenetic and molecular clock evidence. Hyde et al. (2020c) refined the families of Sordariomycetes, and accepted 17 families within Amphisphaeriales. This treatment was followed by Samarakoon et al. (2022) with addition another new family Appendicosporaceae.
Type family: Amphisphaeriaceae G. Winter.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Amphisphaeriales.
