Classification: Ascomycota families incertae sedis, Fungi.
The commensalistic lichenicolous genus Ajaysinghia was introduced by Joshi (2022c) to accommodate the type species A. dendriscostictae, which grows on the upper and lower sides of thallus of Dendriscosticta praetextata (Räsänen) B. Moncada & Lücking. It is characterized by single or contiguous to confluent, multilocular, pseudoperithecial ascomata, narrowly cylindrical, bitunicate asci with 8 spores and brown, ellipsoid ascospores with one septum. Tye type species, A. dendriscostictae, has brown vegetative hyphae that penetrates inside the host thallus, but does not show any sign of discoloration, necrosis, or injury to the host. Additionally, the lichen also produces apparently healthy apothecia. Therefore, the author proposed that this new taxon seems to be a parasymbiont or a weak parasite. Up to now, this is a monotypic genus and no sequences are available in GenBank.
Type species: Ajaysinghia dendriscostictae Y. Joshi, on Dendriscosticta praetextata (Joshi 2022c).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Ajaysinghia.
