Adelococcus was established by Theissen (1918) to accommodate the type species A. alpestris, which was transferred from Rosellinia alpestris Zopf. This genus is characterized by black, perithecioid ascomata that erupt from the thallus or fruiting bodies of the host. The longitudinal section of ascomata shows them to be spherical, cylindrical, or short and broad pear-shaped, with a broad, flat truncated apex and a brown wall. The non-fissitunicate asci are bulging to broadly cylindrical, short-stalked, broadly rounded at the apex, and 8-spored. The ascospores are usually 1-celled, rarely 2-celled with a media transverse septum, elliptical, hyaline and finely haloed when young, and brown and microrugulate when mature (Matzer et al. 1990). Four species are classified within this genus, all are lichenicolous, and three of which grow on crustose lichens, including: Adelococcus alpestris on Acarospora glaucocarpa and A. macrospora; Adelococcus interlatens on Clauzadea immersa, Hymenelia prevostii and Sarcogyne regularis; and Adelococcus porocyphi on Porocyphus rehmicus. Only Adelococcus immersus grows on the foliose lichen Dermatocarpon biennense. To date, no sequence data is available in GenBank.
Type species: Adelococcus alpestris (Zopf) Theiss. & Syd.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Adelococcus.
