Adelococcaceae was introduced by Triebel (1993) to accommodate the genera Adelococcus Theiss. & Syd. and Sagediopsis Sacc. ex Vain. Both genera exhibit features considered primitive within the Verrucariales, such as the presence of paraphysoids and a simple pseudoparenchymatous, aclypeate ascomatal wall structure. These characteristics led to the placement of the family within Verrucariales, with Adelococcus designated as the type genus (Triebel 1993).
The family is characterized by perithecioid, globose to pyriform, black ascomata. The ascomatal wall is apically dark brown and thickened, becoming dark brown to pale brown at the base and pseudoparenchymatous in structure. The hymenial gel is hemiamyloid, showing an ILugol (1:6) + bluish reaction and ILugol + red to red-violet. Periphyses and periphysoids are numerous and distinct, while paraphysoids are more or less evident. Asci are clavate or broadly cylindrical, thick-walled, and of the Verrucaria-type (Triebel 1993).
Navarro-Rosinés et al. (2010) introduced Pseudopyrenidium, typified by P. tartaricola (Lindsay) Nav.–Ros., Zhurb. & Cl. Roux, and suggested placing it within Adelococcaceae. However, when Etayo et al. (2021) described a second species, Pseudopyrenidium epipertusariae, and published molecular data, phylogenetic analyses indicated that Pseudopyrenidium is more closely related to Acericola, Melanomma, and Jeremyomyces within Phaeosphaeriaceae.
Type genus: Adelococcus Theiss. & Syd.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Adelococcaceae
